Impossible territory

“The map is not the territory.”*

Alfred Korzybski

*It is important to understand that “the map”, is not a true representation of reality itself or “the territory”. We as individuals do not have access to absolute knowledge of reality, because what we perceive is tinted through our own experience – our personal "map".

The "Impossible territory" project consists of works using various techniques, including a series of photographs, video works, photographic objects and sound recordings. The idea of the project refers to the thesis put forward by the Polish-American philosopher Alfred Korzybski: "The map is not the territory". All works were created before the outbreak of the pandemic, when travelling on the Internet seemed to be merely an interesting form of entertainment and not the only safe way to travel. Using popular computer games, travel guides and other online sources, I sought to explore how digital culture is changing our perception of the natural landscape. Photographic objects were created using screenshots of textures from computer games, images from personal archives, and views from Google Street View, which were reassembled into new spatial landscapes after being printed and cropped. The sound was an important element of the "Impossible territory" project - Jacek Doroszenko prepared minimalist, spatial sound installations, which were connected to the whole arrangement of the project's exhibition at the Propaganda Gallery in Warsaw.
